Cleese said that under John Birt, who was director-general from 1992-2000, the BBC aped commercial channels and went for the “lowest common denominator”.
“Basically, in Britain we’ve gone from what was a middle class culture with all its failings to a tabloid culture,” he said.
Cleese is also working on a new discussion show for GB News, which will tackle “subjects that get people upset”.
“There are a lot of good angles to ‘woke’ but then it goes to crazy extremes,” he said.
“There is a huge argument about wokery and some of it stems from a very good idea, which is: let’s try to be kind to people. But I believe it has become far too dominated by people who are frightened of offending people. I think you have to allow offence.”

curiously enough my daughter is currently working on a yet-to-be-transmitted TV show for a Uk broadcaster which is basically Fawlty Towers whereby one partner in the couple and the staff are in on the pranks, mess-ups and spanish waiter beating antics.
Its very much for the tik tok generation however, which i cant see John cleese targetting, somehow...

The Red Dwarf reboot was good but it relied heavily on the good will it made from before. Plus Back to Earth was utter dogshite.

It will be utter shit . No doubt some will lap it up . I can only think of 2 sitcoms who came back after a long break and picked up even better than the 1st time around. The likely lads and steptoe and son who had 5 years off not 44 .

All the old classics from our childhoods were very of their time and can't be rebooted without losing their charm and what made them special.
The classic family sitcom format is dead and has been for years.

Cleese stated about a few years ago he was done with the UK and was going to live in the Caribbean, he comes across as a right twat.
Agree ref Open All Hours, was bloody awful and yes depressing.

Rodney Trotter as a key protagonist by all accounts.
Absolutely loved Frasier. Very clever and subtle comedy, with a cast that was unchanged in years.
Unfortunately that untalented, unfunny cunt being in it is enough for me to give the reboot a swerve. Probably.

The Frasier reboot is intriguing, Rodney Trotter as a key protagonist by all accounts. Love to think it’ll be great but these days it seems almost impossible for most sane people over 25 to be able to enjoy comedy without it needing to tick a load of woke boxes
